Reason to start The Challenge

I have been training for a while but not seeing the results I've wanted. After getting married last year, I have been enjoying the festive season for too long. I feel like I need something to keep me motivated and accountable. I'm also keen to see just how far I can push myself.

What did you like most about The Challenge?

I really enjoyed the structure of the challenge. Everything you needed was laid out for you to follow. No need to think about it, just follow the plan. If I had any questions, I used the Forum and asked a question, or searched for a similar thread or question and answer. It was great to have the coaches available, and I always got a reply within 24 hours. I also found the journal to be really important, as I could track how I was feeling, and also had an insight into what everyone else was going through! It was good to know I wasn't alone when I was lacking motivation or was tired and hungry... the fact that it felt like it was a journey with others kept me motivated! I had a habit of checking the latest journal entries every night as my night time reading!

What was the hardest thing about your Challenge?

The hardest thing about the challenge was going to social events in which I would be surrounded by food and alcohol! I stuck consistently through the eating plan, and ended up taking my own food everywhere I went. It actually became a talking point with people asking me for tips about healthy eating and training questions. I also snuck my food into a couple of cafes a couple of times, but they didn't seem to mind as long as I was up front about it. I was lucky in that once I had explained to my friends and family what I was doing, they were very supportive of my lifestyle changes.

What impact has The Challenge had on your life?

The challenge has hugely impacted the way I view food and training. I have always loved exercising and being fit and active, but would tell myself I could eat whatever I wanted because I was active. I have really embraced the supplementation of BCAAs, Glutamine, Creatine, Recovery and Protein which I used to think were a bit of a waste of time and money! The supplements really helped me to keep going and be able to bounce back after a big weights session with minimal muscle soreness, and gave me a pick me up when I needed. The XTBurn tastes great, and I would look forward to having it in the morning before my fasted cardio as a wake me up! Also, the Dutch Chocolate Night Time shake helped me to shake any chocolate cravings... After dinner has traditionally been my weakness for chocolate cravings, so it really satisfied my sweet tooth (along with the Maxines Burn Bars - Chocolate Caramel Crunch! Yum! Cheating without cheating!). The other impact the challenge has had on my life is that it has given me confidence in myself. I used to stress about the way I looked, or the way my clothes fit, but now I can't wait to go shopping. I am also contemplating doing a figure competition in the near to mid term future... something I may have dreamed about but never actually believed I could make it happen. I am the leanest I've ever been, dropping from 23-24% bodyfat to 10% within the 12 weeks, and increasing my lean mass by 4kgs. Before I would make excuses as to why I couldn't be lean and fit looking, but Maxines made me put the excuses aside and really aim for a goal. I had no idea it was possible, now I think anything is possible if you want it bad enough.

What would you say to people who are thinking of doing The Challenge?

Go for it! It is great to have a goal, and be supported by like-minded people. It's amazing what you can achieve in a relatively short space of time. I just wish I'd done a challenge sooner!

Anything else you would like to tell us about your Challenge?

I would like to thank everyone who has supported me. Both the gyms I go to (Jetts Northcote and Doherty's Brunswick) for the supportive and friendly environment. My family for not seeing as much of me over the past couple of months. And my gorgeous husband for putting up with my hANGRYness and work out obsession... he has been my absolute rock.

Day 84! Check in photos taken, now kicking back relaxing and chilling with my husband. Got a lovely dinner planned out, but hitting the gym before we go! Feeling a bit gym deprived due to only light cardio yesterday and no weights yesterday or this morning!!! Must be addicted!!! Getting back on the clean eating tomorrow, but at the moment have let go of the reigns and eating my heart out!!! I know this will be a lifestyle change, but will be fitting in some re-feed days in able to be slightly more social than I have been in the last 10-12 weeks. Can't wait till Gala night when I get to meet all the amazing women I have been seeing every day on social media... You are all stars!!! Meantime here is a sneak peak of my final photos. Had a blast at the gym this morning taking them :-)

Tanned up, carbing up and pumped up! Can't wait for photos tomorrow morning. On an ultra high! Might be from the carbohydrates, but I'll take it :-) This is it! Can't wait to see the before and after shots side by side... It's funny when you're in your body you can't really see how massive the changes are until you see them in a comparison photo.

So hard to concentrate today, I'm pretty pumped up about getting these photos done! Did fasted cardio this morning and a quick fast shoulders and arms session this evening. Will pump back tomorrow with some light squats and glutes then rest on Saturday and get my spray tan! My meals are all planned up to photo time. Then I have a appointment booked to go through a reverse diet plan so I can slowly increase my carbs and calories. I'm hoping to maintain my body fat at just a bit higher than what I'm sitting at now, maybe the mid teens... So happy with how my body has changed through this process, and inspired to continue with the healthy eating...(at least 90% of the time anyway)!!!

These last two weeks have been so hard! I think it's because I've had to change my routine for work, and my hours and body clock have been all over the place. Anyway, only 3 days to go til final pictures! I am so excited, although I'm still not 100% sure on an outfit! Will probably take a few and see what looks best... Speaking of outfits, I guess I'll have to think about what I'm wearing to the gala in the next few weeks too! Looking forward to meeting all the competitors and just having a blast of a night. Lots to look forward to but still taking it day by day

So... Got my DEXA scan results yesterday, and I was soooooo surprised with the results! Dropped 13% bodyfat from the start of the challenge, down to 10% overall! Increase of 4kg of lean, and decrease of 9kg of actual fat mass... Needless to say, I'm pretty stoked, and shocked. I never thought I would ever be this lean. Unfortunately my abs are kinda invisible, so not sure what happened there... Anyway, nothing can take away from how awesome it feels to find out what works for your body. Not long to go... Let's end on a high!

7 days to go!!! Well, really 6 1/2... Booked a spray tan, and photographs for Saturday and Sunday respectively. Booked a well deserved dinner for two for me and my husband for Sunday night, can't wait! Also planning my reverse diet for the next 4-6 weeks so can hopefully retain the gains! I have been looking forward to this week for so long it seems, it's amazing what you can achieve when you put your mind to it. Fasted cardio tomorrow morning, then back tomorrow night... Legs on Tuesday for the last time before photos... Wanting to just pump all the muscle groups as I know you can't grow much in 6 days! I am so excited to see the results!!!
Also so excited that the Maxines IG account and FB account reposted my IG photo today... Was pretty cool to see it on their pages :-)

Not 9pm on a Saturday night and ready for bed!!! Can't wait to hit the sack. Did a high rep, low weight leg session this afternoon to get the heart rate going, now finding it hard to walk up our three flights of stairs!!! Better to stay in bed once I get there lol... Sleep in tomorrow! Yay!

Can't believe I got through this week! So tough. Up at 4am every day for cardio and then 10 hour days at work with my new role. Only 9 days to go! Must book my spray tan, I haven't had a spray tan for years, maybe since I graduated from University. Should be fun! Also have my final DEXA scan on Monday, hoping for some good composition changes. Can't wait, almost jumping out of my skin ready for everything to happen. Anyway, not long to wait, and some more eating, sleeping and training to go in between now and then. I have to give a huge thank you to my wonderful husband, even though I've been hard to live with the last few weeks, he's still standing by me and totally supportive... Although at the beginning he was supposed to be doing the Maxs muscle up challenge! Maybe next challenge I can support him... hahaha, who am I kidding, he wouldn't do it!!!

Have been pretty slack on my journal last two days... Have been flat out with the new job, and have been struggling to eat on time during the work hours, hope it's not going to affect my outcome! Anyway, when I am eating, it's as planned which is the best thing about meal prepping for days in advance! Training has been pretty good too, just maybe not as much energy as usual either due to the decreased carbs or calories or getting up ridiculously early these days... Finding it hard to get a sweat on, even doing interval training! Never had that problem before as I'm normally sweating just warming up... Anyway, comments about leaning up still coming in, and a DEXA scan booked in for Monday! I would love to have lost some more bodyfat and gained some lean muscle mass. Fingers crossed!!!

What a crap gym session tonight... Really angry with myself that I couldn't give it everything... Had my first of many early early mornings, now starting work at 6am, so up at 4am for my cardio... I'm blaming this change on my lack of strength at the gym tonight... Still got a great burn in my chest, but just couldn't power through it!!! I'm hoping to have more energy tomorrow as it's legs day tomorrow too!!! Only 13 days to go!!! Have booked a nice dinner out with my husband for the Sunday the competition ends, but will try to get back on the healthy eating by Monday!!!

Happy Mother's Day to all the Mum's out there!
Spent the day going from lunch with my mother-in-law to dinner with my Mum. Took all my food for the day, smashed out a intense back session in between, and did meal prep for the next three days! Who needs a rest day!!!

So didn't sleep very well last night, all I could think about was food. I've been keeping my carbs really low in the past couple of weeks, so when I finished my fasted cardio this morning, had oats for breakfast which I haven't had for ages! Then what do you know... Instantly felt more full and firm in the muscles! Higher carb day for me today, think my body is craving a re-feed, so that's exactly what I'll do, higher portions of sweet potato and rice for lunch and dinner.

So news from work today... I have a development opportunity coming my way on Monday... This means 6am starts!!! OMG, that means 4am wake up calls every day!!! Can't pass up the opportunity, but hoping it will mean I can still smash out the last two weeks of this challenge without feeling too exhausted!!!

Legs done... For another three days anyway!!! Finding it pretty hard to walk up and down our stairs these days, especially as our house is over three levels! I hope it's helping my glutes! Anyway, can't believe there's less than 20 days to go, will be sad to not have the deadline to work towards, but I'm hoping to continue the diet structure without being quite so strict. Bed time soon...I've been quite the nanna about getting to bed these days!

    Day 64.
So tired. Got up at 4am to do fasted cardio as I was starting work at 6am today instead of my usual 7.30. Cardio session was awesome for some reason, increased my sprint speed to 19, and it felt easy... Don't you love those days when your body feels light and bouncy!!! Anyway, cut to 4pm when I'm heading to the gym for a shoulder session, and feel so tired like I'm moving through golden syrup. Got through the session with pre workout and creatine! Now, I'm so tired, can't wait for my chocolate night time shake and my head on the pillow to do it all again tomorrow! 20 days to go!!!

So stoked today, three people mentioned that I was looking a lot leaner today! Here I was doubting that there was even a difference, and to get that type of feedback just when you need it the most is pretty rewarding. Can't wait to get to bed tonight, absolutely exhausted.

    Hi All,
Day 61... Feeling a little bit depressed at the moment... I know you shouldn't compare yourself to anyone else, but feeling a little bit underwhelmed with how I look in the mirror compared to how much I feel I'm putting in... Taking it one day at a time, but struggling to tell myself that this will work, and that I will get there! A couple of times in the past few days, I've found myself ALMOST reaching for some of my husbands left overs, or some extra rice, forgetting that I'm actually taking part in the challenge! Fingers crossed some of that Magic I've been hearing about will happen to me! I've definitely been seeing it happen to the other women on the forums :-)
I'm actually dreading doing legs today, which is abnormal for me because it's usually my strongest day. Once I'm under that squat rack, hopefully my mind set will change, it normally does, vanity gets the better of me and I can't help but push myself! Does that happen to anyone else?

Day 60! Yusssss... 24 more days...
Smashed some intervals on the tready this morning, changed it up to be 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off 10kph/18kph. Looking forward to chest tonight, I can always feel it really easily in my chest!
I am actually writing this in the hope that it will take my mind off lunch for another 10-15 mins... I have been wanting to eat it since about 15 mins after my morning burn bar - Mocha Fudge today... and it was my last one too... from now on I'll be substituting a burn shake, with a teaspoon of flax seed oil. The flax seed really helps with digestion and keeping you regular! I'm finding myself addicted to checking out all the journals, and all the amazing pics on instagram... It really makes me want to just get into the gym! Keep it up strong women... I can't wait to meet you all at the Gala... I'll definitely be on the bubbles that night!

Day 59! Woah you must be kidding me... Only 3.5 weeks to go... counting down, but also dreading that final photo! Can we have another 4 weeks please? Feeling better than yesterday... had a light weight / high rep leg session last night that was completely different to how I normally train legs. Feeling it in my glutes today which is great. Tonight I'm looking forward to back, bis and tris my favourite muscles! Just had a caramel crunch Maxine's Burn bar, forgotten how good they are! Defo my favourite flavour. However, already looking forward to lunch, and plotting ways of taking my mind off food while I wait for the 2 hours to come around! Chewing gum anyone? Hoping to take a couple of photos at the gym tonight... doesn't usually happen because it's always so busy, and I feel embarrassed getting out the camera! But It's always inspiring to see all you other girls doing the mirror selfies!

Am struggling today, feeling so tired and lacking energy. Not sure if I should be eating a bit more, or if I'll get used to the smaller portions of carbs! Thought it was hard the last 4 weeks! Hopefully I can struggle through the next few days and get over the hump. Sprints this morning. Legs tonight. Funny thing is that as soon as I'm at the gym I seem to have all the energy in the world! Must be the XtBurn and Creatine!

Fasted cardio this morning, exercise bike and incline walk, will do sprints tomorrow. Back and abs this evening, my favourite! Just had my morning snack of Maxines burn with a teaspoon of flaxseed oil. Yummy! Going out for lunch today, but will pack my own and just order a coffee. Slowly getting used to socialising with my own food hahaha! As long as I have something to eat while other people are eating, I'm feeling great. Took a picture of my midsection this morning, sloooooooowly getting a tiny bit of definition, it's always been my problem area as I am officially an apple shape. One of the reasons I must keep my body fat down as apples are more prone to heart disease and diabetes etc...

So changed my check in photo today, thought I should be wearing the same thing...
Did my fasted cardio this morning, will be hitting the gym later this afternoon for chest and tris. Going for a family BBQ this afternoon too... Will be taking my chicken and broccoli and sticking to the lime and soda water. Keep telling myself it's not long to go now... Plenty of time after the challenge finishes to let loose if I really want to! It's just hard when everyone around you is tucking in and enjoying the food and drinks... But that's life, and although it would be easier for me not to go, you still have to live your life! I actually made trifle to take for dessert, and was so tempted to lick the custard from the spoon, but held off! 4 weeks to go!

Just got home from birthday dinner out... Did really well! Feel a bit sad I didn't really get to celebrate with the Birthday girl, but next month for sure! Had one natural oyster with a squeeze of lemon for starters, then an entree sized grilled fish with sauce on the side, and a serving of stir-fried green vegetables including broccoli, bok choi and courgettes. Was really enjoyable. Also had a peppermint tea for dessert. I am so determined to get through this challenge without regrets that I could have done better. Not long now!

Can't wait to be able to celebrate with a couple of glasses of wine with her in a month!!! Although I know my body has changed from my DEXA scan results, I'm still worried about the results showing through, there are so many awesome strong women on the Social media pages making amazing changes to their bodies and their health and fitness. I haven't had the guts to post anything on my Facebook or instagram account because I am scared to be poorly judged which is terrible to say as I am motivated by everyone else's posts! So, kinda went off the rails eating this morning... Have been soooo hungry so ate some almonds and peanut butter with my morning snack... Ended up demolishing 4 Maxines burn bars and a burn shake! Oh my gosh, feeling a bit terrible to have let myself get out of control, but so much better for eating some extra food! Leg day today, so hoping it will give me some extra energy to squat!

Was wondering why my energy was flagging, and did a comparison of sweet potato macros vs brown rice macros and realized I probably wasn't eating enough sweet potato when substituting it for the brown rice... Doubled my sweet potato today and feeling a lot better now! Training was so hard this morning, don't know how I did it... HIIT on the treadmill for 25 minutes (10 for 1 minute, 16 for 1 minute), and a 16% incline walk for 20... After a legs session yesterday! Needless to say, people are asking if I'm injured as my walking is pretty funny today! DEXA scan this afternoon... Hoping for a good improvement!

Gosh, I don't even know what day it is today... Is it 39? 40? Anyway, it goes to show how fast this challenge is going and how much of a routine I'm into now. Had a later than normal workout today due to meetings and public transport! Anyway, got it done, and quite happy with the workout! Best thing about food preparation is I knew I didn't have to prepare anything for dinner so ate as soon as I got home as I was so hungry, and it was exactly what I should have been eating. Reading everyone's journals and social media posts is pretty motivational... I'm just concerned that I might not be making as much progress as others seem to be. Can't wait til the 8 week check in because I realise that if you see yourself every day, sometimes you can miss the changes!

Waiting for my flight back home from NZ... Awesome weekend... Came completely off my challenge diet for two days, but this trip was planned before I signed up for the challenge... Haven't been back for 5 years, and it's not everyday so was completely worth it. Aside from that, managed to resist having anything extra that I would have had at any other occasion and got in two awesome weights sessions and running around the bay so feeling like I broke even overall... No gains, but nothing lost... Now looking forward to getting back into the routine and smashing out the rest of this challenge!!! I really felt like once I got past this trip I can really begin to give it everything. I just have to make sure I don't dwell on this weekend and move forward with positivity.

Got up super early and did weights session followed by 20 mins of intervals on the treadmill... Had to get it in this morning as I'm travelling to NZ tonight for a Birthday... Have packed protein bars , pre workout and protein shakes... Hope to get in at least one good workout and a run if possible! This weekend was a planned weekend to relax off the challenge, but I really don't want to completely come off the rails!

Day 32... Extra hungry this morning... Must have been the leg session last night and the walk home afterwards! Snuck in an extra burn bar over my last 3 meals... Divided it into thirds to satisfy that peckishness... Hopefully that's the last of that hunger! Trying to drink water and hold out for another 1.5 hours before my protein shake!

Day 31, back at work after Easter... Must say, it's easier to follow a routine when you're working! Had chicken and broccoli for breakfast this morning as I forgot my eggs, was a good change though, and might do it more often as I like to get in more vegetables during the day. This was lunch

Day 30! Where has the time gone? The long weekend has been amazing, getting in as much rest and recovery as possible. Was really good not being tempted at all by hot cross buns or Easter eggs. Have dove all my meal prep for work lunches etc... But actually prefer to make dinner fresh each night so it's a small treat freshly cooked. I'm actually a bit worried about next weekend as I am going to NZ for the weekend for my cousins birthday, and right from the start I have been gearing up to have the weekend as a bit of a break from the challenge. Now, I am going to try and prepare for at least 8 of the 12 meals to be spot on, and have scoped out a gym to get in a couple of quick sessions in when I'm there. Just feeling like I'm on a roll at the moment, so trying to stay on the wagon as much as possible! Wish me luck!

Gutted I didn't do any side or back shots at the start of the challenge, but hopefully see an improvement on this one at the 8 week mark!

Day 27? Jeez where has the time gone! Have been going well, and have managed to work out the best time for all my supps to feel energized for weights sessions. Smashed out a good legs session today :-) Have not been tempted at all by chocolate eggs, probably because all my protein is chocolate flavored! Only thing I feel like I'm missing out on is hot buttered hot cross buns! Have bought 6 and put in the freezer to eat at the end of the 12 weeks! Am so surprised that the new meal plan means eating sweet potato or brown rice at dinner, I absolutely love both! Here's a picture of my dinner tonight (ate early because my training session was super early today) cauliflower, chicken, brown rice with some black rice, and sriracha chilli sauce... What would I do without my chilli sauce?

Just uploaded a photo for the 4 week check in because I couldn't access the forums without uploading a photo! Was planning on uploading one this weekend after a couple of weights sessions, so might change it... However was pretty surprised by the changes that have happened! Here I was thinking that I looked exactly the same, but comparing them side by side I can definitely see an improvement :-) Bring on the next 8 weeks!!!

So been crazy busy the last 3 days, no time to journal! Volunteered at the Arnold's this weekend, so on my feet all day, and snacking on far too much pre-workout and protein bars! I know it's all good stuff, but feel really bloated. Also, feeling a bit demotivated by all the amazing bodies out there! Anyway, hoping to be one of them in the next 9 weeks! Where has the time gone? Back on the routine today, and keeping it tight for the next two weeks.

Day 18... Was going kinda blah until I went to the gym after work... Mr Olympia PHIL HEATH was there working out next to me! Needless to say, threw in an extra few sets that I wouldn't usually have done so I could get another look ... Bit of inspiration on an otherwise uninspiring day!

Goodnight! Had my night time shake and satisfied for bed... It's a great way to finish the day, it also signals to me that the day is over, and no more food. Having some doubts about my progress, so will be sure I'm sticking to the plan in the next few days. See you on day 18!

Day 17. So hungry, and was pretty drained last night... I was very tempted to snack on something a bit naughty, but have to weigh up the pros and cons... How bad do I want this?

Day 16 over and out... Had a really good day eating, just trying to shift my focus off my hunger and onto more constructive things at work. Seemed to work well today. I have a bit of tennis elbow, must have aggravated it doing some bench press or shoulder press. Still managed to have a good back session though, it's like once I'm lifting, all my aches and pains go away until I finish! Not sure if that's a good thing or not. Anyway, glad it's a short week, volunteering at The Arnold Classics this weekend so should be pretty busy!

Day 15 done and dusted. Had a good eating day, happy to say, even though it was a public holiday. Walking past all the people sitting in bars and cafes, was really craving a glass of wine with some cheese and crackers, but resisted temptation for another day! Bring on week 3!

Day 14 complete. It's been an emotional weekend and have really had to resist feelings of temptation. Managed to only have a couple of Maxine's burn bars over the plan... Not great, but at least they weren't chocolate bars! Although tasted just as naughty! Looking forward to getting right back on track tomorrow. Hopefully a better day all round.

Day 13! Quick run this morning before getting my nails done. Going for lunch with family today... Googled the menu for things I can eat. Eggs on toast with a side of spinach and a long black should do the trick... Just put the toast to the side!

Day 12! Worked out that I need to bulk up my food a bit more... Had my eggs this morning with rice and cauliflower, kept me satisfied having that extra fibrous vegetable to digest. Also tasted awesome! I love cauliflower and broccoli thank goodness. More cauliflower and rice with my chicken for lunch too. I love eating

I love eating! After lunch I feel so much more settled! Delicious brown rice, chicken and broccoli. Normally have sweet potato as my carbs, but didn't have any left today. Will be boiling some up tonight. Now just got to hold off on my afternoon snack. Leg day today so ensuring I am fueled up closer to my workout is a must.

Day 9 done and dusted. Actually felt like I'd had enough to eat for the first time this challenge. Night time shake is my saviour because I love something sweet before bed. Have not been having the yoghurt and berries so I can add the yoghurt to my shake, just takes off that intense sweetness. Hopefully I'll feel like this tomorrow, and my legs loosen up from a great leg session on Sunday!

What a struggle getting up this morning! So sore and tired from the week. Had the day off work yesterday, and made the most of it sleeping most of the day between workouts. Have been eating 100%, and training well. Hopefully I can keep this up for the next 75 days!

    65kg

DEXA scan results... 23.2% body fat which is 15kg of fat... Analysis of fat distribution shows most of it in my trunk region which I really could have told her myself, so more abdominal work for me! Going to work on increasing my lean mass through my core so the fat percentage comes down. Good points to note: my lean mass is high, and my bone density is high :-) No osteoporosis for me!!!

Weekend survived! Had a couple of extra Burn Bars over the course of Saturday and Sunday than were in the plan, but I think that's a pretty good effort seeing as the weekend is always my sore point on a diet! Also ate out 2 times, and had no trouble getting some changes to the meals to fit my eating plan... Benefits of the healthy food movement in the last few years!!!
Hopefully the next 11 weeks go this well or better... Glad the first week is out of the way.

Welcome to the weekend!!! This has got to be the hardest part of the week for me. Usually consists of catching up with friends and family for brunch, lunch, drinks and dinner. Survived Friday night, even though it was my sister in law's birthday, and the cake looked amazing... Now to survive Saturday... Packing my own dinner for when we meet up with friends later tonight!
Treating myself to a pedicure too...

Really crap training session today... Was so humid and hot at the gym. Also feeling a bit nauseous from all the protein shakes and pre workout drinks... Arrrrrggggghhhh... Going to try to eat more real food instead of these shakes and bars. 4 shakes in a day is far too many...

Day 4, tracking well to plan... Making a few food swaps... Breakfast was 4 egg whites and 1 yolk with an apple... A bit sick of protein powder to be honest... Prefer to eat real food as it's more satisfying. Looking forward to the Maxines cookie tonight though!

So... First obstacle of the challenge overcome! Massive traffic delays after work meant eating at a restaurant (got the grilled chicken salad which actually was lovely and light with a lemon and oil dressing) and a late gym session, but at least I went! Thank goodness my husband is so supportive, we went together and got in a really good workout before coming home to a quick shower and bedtime! Day 2 done and dusted.
