Reason to start The Challenge

I completed the challange last year and although i got great results, i didnt quite meet my own personal goals. My goal is to have abs., for the first time in my life (at age 40). Problem area is the lower region which i find hard to activate since chilbirth 21 years ago. My whole mid section including hips is just so big, flabby and heavy in comparison to the rest of my body... I cant seem to get my stomach fat down its frustrating.
Hitting 40 has had a major effect on me and i have lost a lot of confidence recently, i would like to feel more confident at the gym- i started lifting weights and working out less then two years ago. This challange is making me feel like i have more understanding of everything although at many times i wish i had of started earlier.

What did you like most about The Challenge?

The main thing that I like about the challenge is the structure. When I started the challenge I didn't know what a lot of the movements were and I didn't know what a superset and tri-set was. You can look at the guide on the weekly schedule which gives a clear explanation. The best part though is the Nutrition plan and the weekly shopping list. You always have exactly what you need to prepare all of your meals. You are shown the measurements and exact amount of food to eat for every meal and I love this. There is no room for cheats or eras. I love the food, it is so healthy, nutritious and tastes so good. I have forgotten a couple of things, I used the Maxine's pure protein during this challenge and although I have no problem using other proteins I particularly like this one. It makes me feel really good, I love the taste and I looked forward to my night time shake with berries. And the caramel protein bar is the best bar I have ever tasted in my life. I will always have a box of these in my fridge for an emergency. I also like the way I look, I like that I am motivated, focused and have heaps of energy.

What was the hardest thing about your Challenge?

The hardest part of the challenge for me was when we moved. I think in this challenge I moved four times. Luckily the last 6 weeks of the challenge was all in one place so that really helped to stay focused and grounded. Its really taken me out of my comfort zone, starting new gyms, just feeling familiar then having to start another one. Learning how all the equipment works, trying to do it fast so it doesn't interrupt with quality and time of workouts. I am naturally fairly shy so just having the confidence to go in and start a new gym is hard for me. Another very hard part is trying to teach myself not to compare my progress to the other girls. So many girls do extremely well and sometimes I feel like I'm out of my depth. I think I just got a bit more understanding towards the end to let it go and just stay focused, work hard and do the best I can and be happy with that.

What impact has The Challenge had on your life?

This challenge has had a very big impact on my life. Although I still struggle daily with self confidence, it has definitely improved big time. Just less then two years ago I would never have walked into a gym and done anything let alone the things I am doing now with ease. All I could do was walk on the treadmill. Now I'm experimenting all of the time, using resistance bands, squatting, deadlifting, I do a lot of movements using only one leg, lots of balancing. I am still a very new beginner, but compared to just a short time ago I am a Pro. My adult daughter is actually proud of me. I feel like I have accomplished something special. Five years ago I had a very bad accident and I crushed both of my hands, I was weighing 82 kg. Although I still get lots of pain and certain movements can be tricky my grip has blown me away. I used to randomly drop things before I started using weights, now it never happens. So I cant lift as heavy as some girls, but I can do it. I think I am slowing gaining more self confidence. (today I weighed in at 60 kg)

What would you say to people who are thinking of doing The Challenge?

This is my advise for anyone thinking of doing the challenge. I would say do it! It is a solid programme and if you follow it the results are guaranteed. Be realistic about what you can achieve in 12 weeks, set yourself high goals - remember you can achieve a lot in 12 weeks. Most importantly don't compare your results with anyone else, this is about you!

Anything else you would like to tell us about your Challenge?

I love the way I look now!!!. Turning 40 was a low point in my life.
Today when I looked at my finishing photos I felt proud of myself, I think that I look terrific for my age now and I am very happy. I don't usually wear much makeup and I never ever get fancy to go to the gym, I work hard and its very exciting to sit down at the end and see the transformation. My outcome has by far exceeded my own expectations.

Day 83; Oh gosh I postponed my photos to the very last day possible working around my periods. I am normally spot on to the day or sometimes one day early. I have to be on painkillers for first and some of second day and suffer from heavy bleeding and clotting. (I normally sedate myself and curl up in a ball for as long as I can. I can say ive never been wanting my period to come as bad as I do now! Please come today please, wearing small bottoms for photo is going to be out of the question if not!! least I don't get pre menstrual bloating anymore for week leading up to it!!!

Day 82; Found these pictures both at the start of the challenge.. travelled a bit and moved a couple of times so used resistance bands which I think are really effective. Have been using them again with seated squats, makes it hard but can really feel the glutes being forced to activate .

Day 80; Today I woke up extra lean (for me) after a day off weights and cardio yesterday. I added quite a bit of extra healthy fat to my diet yesterday as well as salmon for lunch and dinner. Seems to agree with me big time. This is by far the best abs I have had in my entire life, although my body fat is no where near as low as a lot of the other girls I have tried to compensate my doing really gruelling ab workouts using heavy weight. Next mission is trying to figure out why I cant get my bodyfat as low as id like?

Day 78; Although I still catch myself doing it sometimes, I have certainly got much better at not comparing myself with others during the challenge. instead I have put all my attention on focusing on how much progress I have made in the last 11 weeks. This certainly cheered me up!! Its easy to have unrealistic expectations, mine was having a perfect 6 pack in 12 weeks. With how high my body fat percentage was to begin with I'm not sure? And is it possible to get rid of that remaining fat when you have lost a lot of weight? I'm not sure also, I suppose I will find out as time goes on. Today I am 21 kg lighter then I was 5 years ago, have to look at the bigger picture.

Day 74; Feeling so good now!!!! I think its because I have crossed another leg day off the list.... 3 more to go until the end of the challenge, looking forward to having a some rest and a big meal. I had gone into a bit of a weird situation where I had stopped losing weight and was gaining last week. I'm not too concerned but I couldn't figure out why? Last couple of days has corrected and I am now dropping weight again. Its different for me as I haven't been this light since my teenage years and I'm not sure what is a healthy weight for me any more. Weighed 50kg at age 17 - then after child birth and generally slowing; down eating more junk and being unhappy in life weighed 82kg 5 years ago before I left new Zealand to Canada on my own. This is when my weight loss began although it was done via lots of walking with luggage, lots of moving house /town/country/ generally being on the move a lot more and having more excitement about life. My sister called it the drinking diet because I drank most nights but because I was happier and active still lost weight. Before I travelled I would consume a king size bar of chocolate a day along with all the rest including cheese popcorn, chips, lollies.... I just want to find more of a balance I love to be active and I love healthy food - but then I also get carried away with alcohol and junk food. I'm determined at the end of this challenge to learn moderation I really like the feeling of being able to move around easily and not have all that fat around my hips and thighs and abdomen. I need to be reasonably lean as weight doesn't distribute itself evenly it just goes all to that area and makes me so uncomfortable.

Day 72; Forced day off today; still all the things I want to do at gym running through my head all night. Should I just squeeze in one of my ab workouts, star jumps, all these things I need to be doing. Just have to learn to quiet the mind and today I will not do any of the above its only one day.

Day 72; Leg day yesterday had a really good session, fitted a lot in. Going lighter as I am not having the energy to lift normal weight. Slow start and I think the humidity really effects my workouts. I don't cope with humidity , bring on winter! training will be so much more intense. Cant wait to see what I can do in the cooler weather.

Day 72; My waist size is really decreasing; wore jeans on the weekend, before challenge were so tight I could barley get them on and so tight on stomach hard to sit down. Now they felt like they were falling off, my partner commented that they looked baggy on the legs. I have some that my sister whos been smaller then me for years gave me because they were to tight for her and they will fit perfectly. She buys the label expensive jeans so its a real treat. Even with the drastic loss I'm still finding the skin is hanging and not tight under the belly button I wanted to focus on that area, but seems it might take more time. Since 2011 I have dropped 20 kilos, I wonder if that lose skin ever goes away?

Day 65; Stocked up on all the necessities to make it through the next couple of weeks! I will always be loyal to these two products; I'm a little flexible with protein bars, there are a few I can eat; although if I have the choice it will always be a maxines caramel! But as far as protein goes this is a real gem for me, I have such a hard time with proteins, my partner normally ends up getting all my partly used ones as I buy then don't like.. Hes had pea protein, rice protein, you name it ive tried it and not liked it haha! I put frozen berries in this one and ice for my night time shake and I actually look forward to it instead of force feeding !! love it! Weighed myself this morning and I am 61.6 kg (that's over 10 kg loss since start of challenge) I cant stop losing weight its fantastic it wasn't really my main concern and I didn't get on scales until week 4, but I'm doing all the workouts and not missing any meals so its a bonus! I really think this type of protein and the grains and food sources ive been eating just really agree with my body for weight loss.

    10:26 AM

Day 64; A lot of my clothes don't feel much different with my changing body, some just don't fit right anymore especially around shoulders. The most noticeable is underwear which are quite lose! Total weight lost to date = 10kg. lots of that comes from the stomach.

    1:51 PM

Day 58; So its that time of the month again! Again this month I did not gain my normal 1-2 kilo in bloating. Apart from feeling a little soft and flabby last 5-7 days (I can always tell at least a week in advance) and a little weaker last night doing back and shoulder routine not much else happening physically.. Strong cravings over the weekend for all sorts, chips, Mexican, cheese..... everything, became so overpowering on Saturday night I had also done 9 days training in a row while on antibiotics for kidney infection which wiped me out. I ate an extra maxines protein bar!!!! I can say its the second time during the whole challenge that I have added extras, last time was probably the same time last month hehe. I did however weep a lot this time around, woke up weeping last night. Maybe all the chocolate and other goodies I would normally eat suppress things a little bit. I never like crowds so going to the gym yesterday afternoon in a busy shopping mall was all just a bit much and also made me weepy! Issues are coming up about lack of support in general, but the lack of support I have had from my family, growing up and also still to this day. I think my lack of self esteem and confidence although sometimes I get small breakthroughs, is still fairly strong around going to the gym. I'm really working on just ignoring what is going on around me and focusing on myself, we all have different body shapes, injuries, weak points, strong points, are all at different stages, and can always improve. Finally finding Instagram on the weekend actually cheered me up, connecting with others (nice ladies too) has made me feel more like part of a group. I suppose I'm missing this support in such a huge way it helps a lot.

    7:40 AM

Day 52; I just came across this photo, the night before I left on my own to Canada 5 years ago with my daughter, who is now finished university and living in new Zealand. I weighed 82 kg, didn't exercise much and my diet was shocking. As a teenager was very active and weighed 50 kg, could eat what ever I wanted and still would not put weight on. (funny how your body changes as you get older and after childbirth). This morning I weighed in at 64 kg, and although I am feeling a bit chunkier then I should at this stage when I put everything into perspective I am 18 kg lighter then I was just a few years back! This is great motivation for me to stay on track, I'm not too concerned about the scales but if I see them creep too much past the 70 kg mark that's when I go into freak out mode because I never want to be as big as I was in this photo with no energy!!!!!

    3:47 PM

Day 50; Seems I have wiped out the store of Maxine's caramel protein bars! Since I was sent a sample one I have changed from mint choc... This is by far the most yummiest bestest protein bar I have tasted in my life. I remember a few years back I tried my first protein bar a large mint one, after chewing on a piece for about 15 minutes I gave to my partner as I couldn't get through it. Have tasted many bad bars since then, I am in heaven with these!!! I have a solution to my problem Max's supershred caramel crunch; checked all ingredients are the same, its just a bigger bar so I need to cut off a 3rd of the bar. (my partner might even get some if he's lucky lol).

Day 49; Went out for a meal last night, just feeling a bit home bound after being sick for so long. I had salmon and steam vegetables, didn't use the side sauce and removed skin! This is also a glass of iced water accompanying it! I enjoyed every single mouthful lol. Came home rather hungry restaurants seem to be rather stingy with the veg!!! I so wanted an extra Maxine's protein bar as well as my night time shake but I had a hot cup of my kidney herbal tea instead! Rather proud of myself as I am fully back to my exercise regime now, this time last week I felt like I was going to have to give up and wait until next time... (me being me rather determined I just carry on)! I'm even back to doing ab exercises today after cardio and not too much pain, I feel fabulous!

Day 47; Day 5 with no training!!! ugh!!! Today I am going to try and do my home "glute" routine with resistance bands. And if that's goes well, gym this afternoon! Least at home I can relieve my bladder often, poor kidneys!

Day 46; No gym again, back to dr's today for third different lot of antibiotics; I sure hope this works I have spent the last couple of hours going over in my head what I will do when I can get back! lol. Just lots of rest at the moment, I think I will go in this arvo and maybe do chest and biceps. Feeling a bit more positive today that this might work!

    8:13 AM

Day 45; ok so today I still cant go to the gym, kidneys still feeling tender and I don't want to go backwards again! Being very careful. Realised the week 8 check in opens in a week and although I know my progress will be good, I haven't trained as much or with the intensity I normally could so decided to see where I was at with everything in comparison with last time. Wow this is a pleasant surprise, I am starting to notice some muscle above the knee (this is the first time I have ever seen muscle in a picture above the knee) now I am really rearing to go, I just need to get better now!

    7:58 AM

Day 44; Facing the reality today that I cannot go into the gym and workout like I want too. Big mistake going in on Sunday before healing this kidney infection. Took a step backwards! Such frustration and panic set in yesterday thinking what if it doesn't go away, what if I have to stop etc etc.. Its only been three days!!! Have a bad habit of looking at others as always better then me. Why are they so lean, why are their abs look so good, how can their legs be so toned and muscular after six weeks, and not mine??? It has been doing my head in, I actually made myself cry by doing my ab routine on Friday with a kidney infection, this is not good. From now on no more comparing, no more of this I am doing everything I can and putting in 100% diet and exercise, that is good enough! This may take me a little longer then I would like, I will just keep on going. Id like to turn this around and once I am better use it to in a positive way as motivation to push myself to get where I want to be.

Day 43; Lovely big salad with rice and falafel for lunch today; recovering from this kidney infection. Antibiotics are slowly kicking in, tried to do some ab work yesterday not feeling so good in the back region this morning. will need to wait longer before attempting again. Will pace myself this week. feel like this challenge is going by too fast in terms of progress. Not sure if 6 weeks is going to be long enough to get where I had planned...

Day 41; Had to call after hours dr last night. Came home from gym in agony, been feeling rotten all week just put it down to moving and extra stress. struggled with all of my workouts feeling very strange and thinking I was just getting used to different gym feeling a bit shaky etc.. turns out I have a kidney infection so started antibiotics last night and will have to stay home today, hopefully I can go to gym tomorrow even if I just do a gentle workout...

Day 38; EEKK the inbody happened to be at the gym yesterday which was great because I have been thinking it would be good to get one for the last couple of weeks see what everything is looking like!! oh no my body fat percentage is 22.9 %!!! I had thought it may be around 18-19% as I see some of the ladies are already as low as 12-15. what to do?? I have 100% not strayed from my eating plan if anything I have possibly been better I thought! Weights and cardio also done as per sheets. maybe I need to up the cardio? I'm not sure what to do. High body fat percentage considering all the above and my weight dropped 6 kg, I hope this doesn't mean I've lost all muscle. now I feel maybe have I been going backwards. will carry on and re check in two weeks to see if there are any changes. Gosh I know its not good to compare but I am now feeling like I am way, way behind.

    12:46 PM

Day 34; Its that time of the month again!!!!!!! This journal is great!!! Made myself an entry on day 9; just to remind myself how my body gets before menses. last month it made me feel very despondent as my initial progress went backwards briefly. Did a leg workout today, very sluggish not as much strength, balance off! Why didn't I read my journal lol! Well I did but I didn't get the usual bloating that I have got my whole entire life, just that big frumpy heavy stone in the gut feeling at least a week before hand! ugh! I actually thought because of moving and being run down I might be going to get it late (this never happens!) My stomach has been the flattest in years for the past couple of days and my weight is down so much I cant actually believe its true. Last night I did shoulders and triceps and I felt better in myself, my stomach isn't sticking out like it usually does; was nice.. (I did notice I was weaker though, again I had put it down to moving and lack of sleep). So this is a double reminder for next month not to stress when things change for a few days it wont last, I will be strong again in a few days time. Just deal with being weaker, you are not going backwards!!! So time to take a forced day off that is not due, will have to work extra hard to make up for it!!!!!

Day 33; Moved again last night!!! Made sure I had a nice healthy dinner before we headed off! Vegetarian sausages, rice and a large salad with grated beetroot. Had a terrible sleep last night, well no sleep at all just far to stimulated etc.. missed my night time shake and didn't get my breakfast until 10:00am, feeling a little jaded today. The good thing is that I did not get any takeaway or junk food, so I suppose that is the main thing. I am feeling very excited as I have been to three different gyms since the challenge started inducing quite a bit of anxiety everytime I have to go into a new one. This afternoon we are trying out a local gym and it will be the last one until the end of the challenge. I feel now I can do much better, knuckle down and really get things happening. My diet has been 100% up until now but I think ill be more solid once I settle in and get some more classes or cardio sessions in. Got a nice surprise this morning when I weighed myself for the first time since the challenge started as I have lost 5 kg down to 67 kg. Last year I think on average I lost 2 kg each 4 weeks. I feel strong at the gym and don't feel I have lost muscle or strength. wow good for my motivation as I was feeling a bit ungrounded! Carry on!!

Day 30; Yes i did it!!!!! I made it through easter without touching a single easter egg.. last year when i did the challange it was my 40th birthday half way through and i also carried on like normal trained twice and continued with the meal plans all day. I amaze myself at my willpower when i put my mind to something i really can withstand quite a lot. Had an awesome shoulder/bicep session yesterday felt strong again and lifted heavier on shoulder weights. Finished session with an exercise i saw ; 100 shoulder raises with only 1 kg dumbbells. Thought this will be no problem. Haha i made it to 40 and then it got incredibly hard, could only do about 7 reps then stop for couple of seconds re focus and carry on.. completed!!!! Today is a day off, no training at all..

Day 28; I think it might be time for a day off!! I am so tired today i slept for almost three hours right through lunch time which i never do.. Feeling weak at the gym and a bit puffy today, did the best i could; and experimented with some new tricep and ab exercises. Ready for phase 2 !!!!!.

Looked over some of the week 4 progress photos and i dont understand why i cant get this lower stomach fat down?? I have been doing exercises specific for this area and starting to think it wont happen again. Will keep on at it but it is pissing me off!

Got to the gym this morning for a chest workout. Followed by Hip thrust 40 kg x 3 sets 10 reps. Ouch ! Doing janets squat challange so the glutes are getting used a bit more then normal!!!

Day 20; Saturday leg day; All week i have been feeling quite sluggish due to humidity which i dont cope well with and lack of sleep. Today was a good day at the gym though so I am feeling much much better. Starting to see only little but definite changes in my leg muscles, this has been a very slow process for me mabye because im quite new to deadlifting and squating etc. I learnt how to do my first real sqaut only about 18 months ago and I am 40 (bit of a late starter).!!!!! Deadlift: Bar x 10 reps 30 kg x 10 reps 40 kg x 10 reps 50 kg x 10 reps 60 kg x 8 reps 70 kg x 5 reps (this is my p.b to date) my carpal tunnel makes my hands open up and it slips out so am thinking of ways to make my grip better, maybe gloves? Squats: Bar x 10 30 kg x 10 40 kg x 10 40 kg x 10 Leg press machine: 3 x sets of 10 reps (not sure of weight) Calf raises just using body weight: All three angles (feet straight, feet facing in, feet facing out) 3 x set of 10 reps each. Feeling good now,

Day 18; Spicey grilled tofu! Sprinkled with cayenne pepper and mixed herbs. Delicious. Trying to follow the vegan menu (apart from white fish and salmon) getting familiar with the carb/protein/fat content of vegan products, so that i can alter daily carbohydrate intake.

Day 12; I will have to move two more times in the first month of the challange, definitely disrupts things somewhat. Ive found this simple elastic gives me a pretty good workout when i cant make it to a gym. Today was a glute workout using this band and a shorter thicker band. Pretty effective.

Day 9; Week 1 complete!! I am making this entry for my self so that i can look back at it in a months time, hopefully it will help me so i dont feel depressed and think that i am going backwards when my body is all puffy and bloated!!!!! So my diet and exercise has been spot on all week. My goal is to really work on getting my mid section looking smaller and more toned as well as increasing muscle etc.. I was talking to my friend over the weekend who is also doing a chllange and noticed positive changes in her first week. However for me not the same. My stomach seemed to grow even bigger, not sleeping at all, constipated, bloated hips, chunky soft looking body, feeling quite weak with workouts, muscles especially around neck and chest all very tender. I was thinking i am really falling apart (today i get my menses)!!!!! Almost a week early so i hadnt made the connection, had lots of extra stress from moving and around my partners job. I have noticed since I started lifting weights that I feel more prone to injury especially in the hamstring region. I need to lower the intensity for a few days leading up and definetly take a day or two off at start. (Not sure if this is nomal ). Plan; work extra hard for the rest of the month to make up for this.

Day 5; This is what i am talking about. (Lower ab fat i can literally grab huge handfuls and nothing i do seems to make it go away. Even when the rest of me is fairly lean i still have this. I am determined every week to minimize it and focus on keeping it activated during exercise. This is the area i hope i can change the most...
