Reason to start The Challenge

There are so many reasons why I'm doing the challenge! My main reasons are for health and longevity, I want to live my best life. I want to get fitter, stronger, leaner. I've already lost 26kg to date, and I'm ready for the next stage in my health and fitness journey!

What did you like most about The Challenge?

I love that it’s so much more than just a 12 week challenge! Maxine’s Challenge takes the guesswork out of healthy eating and exercise. They not only give you the exercise programs and meal plans, they provide recipes, shopping list, articles, mindset podcasts, motivational weekly videos, access to the public forum to have your questions answered, and so much more. The Maxine’s community is incredibly supportive. I particularly liked the journal, I could document my own journey and also have a look at how other people were going. Chances were that if I was having a difficult day, someone else was too. We all go through the ups and downs together!

What was the hardest thing about your Challenge?

Overall consistency was the most challenging thing over the last 12 weeks. I stayed on track with both food and exercise throughout the Challenge, but life happens and some days are easier than others.

Keeping my mindset right was a big priority for me. Every day I take a moment to assess how I’m feeling that day, recognise any upcoming challenges (social outing, travel etc.), think about what I will do to keep myself on track, but most importantly appreciate just how far I’ve come. Even on day 1, I sat down and thought about how well I did my first training session, how I was proud of myself for getting my food right and how grateful I was for joining the Challenge.

A quote that I often used during this challenge was “Prepare for success”. Make it as easy as possible for yourself to complete every day. If I have an early morning the next day, I set up my weights at home to be ready for me when I wake up. Meal prep was enormously helpful, especially for those days when I had a lot of travelling to do or if I just didn’t feel like cooking. Defrosting a pre-prepared meal is a lot easier than driving to get take-away. I threw away all junk food from the house to remove any temptations for the difficult days. You learn what works and doesn’t work for you.

What impact has The Challenge had on your life?

Honestly, Maxine’s Challenge has had such a huge impact on my life. Where to begin!
I now naturally wake up at the crack of dawn and generally need less sleep. I have come to really enjoy and prefer eating healthy food. I have learned so much more about nutrition, and I’m continuing to learn about fitness and exercise. I have just started studying a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Nutrition to further arm myself in my health and fitness journey.
The Challenge has done more than just change my body, I have also strengthened my mental toughness.
I was really lucky to have my partner doing the Challenge with me so it was incredible to be able to support each other through this. We’ve learned a lot about ourselves and also about each other, which inevitably brought us closer together. Our puppy Baxter has really benefited too, he doesn’t just get walks now, he goes for a run with us every day.

What would you say to people who are thinking of doing The Challenge?

Absolutely go for it. A piece of advice that has stuck with me over the years is, “What if the right time never comes?”. Don’t keep waiting, don’t keep putting it off. Make the choice to live your happiest life. You get a world of support from the coaches, ambassadors and other challengers. It might just end up being the best thing that you’ve ever done for yourself!

    Day 84!!! Wow - final day, final journal, final workout on the challenge! It feels awesome to be here, what a journey. This is just the beginning, I'm ready for my next chapter! Thank you to Maxine's for all of your support and thank you to all of the challengers, it's been fantastic doing this challenge alongside so many lovely people!

    Day 78 Week 12!!! Feels awesome to get here! It has gone so quickly but looking back so much has happened. What a great journey. Looking forward to the week ahead.

    Day 70 The other day I booked an appointment to have my body age compared to my actual age. I'm proud to say that my body is three years younger than my actual age. I was fully expecting to see a much different number so it caught me by surprise. This is the first time I've had my body age done so nothing to compare it to although I'll keep this appointment in mind for the future. Very happy! I had one of those "A-ha!" moments yesterday. By chance I found an article that suggested putting cinnamon into black coffee instead of milk. What a game changer. It smooths out the coffee, taking away the bitterness. It's really quite pleasant. I definitely recommend trying it.

    Day 67 Where to begin! I've been reflecting on the last 10 1/2 weeks and looking at how the Challenge has changed my life. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it. The list is endless - physically fitter, leaner and mental clarity/sharpness are some of the big changes but I'll touch on that in a few weeks (since these changes are still happening!). I have always been a big believer in eating healthy food but the challenge has helped me appreciate just how much of an impact our diet has on our bodies. I mentioned a few journals ago that I'm now eating more than I used to, so it has been a huge eye-opener for portion sizes and eating the right foods. I've decided to study a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Nutrition to further arm myself with knowledge in my personal heath and fitness journey. I have briefly thought about doing bodybuilding competitions but at this stage I'm really enjoying running my own race. It's not off the cards though. The count down has begun - 17 days to go!

    Day 63 I just ordered the new Maxine's Berry Cheesecake protein powder - I'm so excited! Today I wanted to knuckle down to make sure I know what my plan is for after the Challenge, hence the shopping. Prepare for success. I was outside just before and caught a glimpse of myself in the reflection of the sliding door. Far out, I hardly recognised myself! I think that my body has changed so significantly over the last nine weeks that my mind is still catching up! I'm having the best time on this Challenge, it's bittersweet to see it slowly wrapping up. The best part is still ahead of us though, bring it on. Hello, week 10 :D

    Day 56 I'm ready to hit it hard for weeks 9-12! I'm interested to see how I feel with the added fats in the new meal plan. I'm officially in the best shape of my life, it's amazing that in 8 short weeks that so much can happen! It's funny the things you notice, lately I've been noticing how my belly button has been changing. It didn't even cross my mind that it would change! Bring on week 9 tomorrow :)

    Day 52 The week 9-12 meal plan and exercise program both look great. The meal plan caught me by surprise, I was fully expecting some drastic changes like massively reduced portion sizes, but this actually looks like more food, I'm stoked! I have rarely been hungry on the last two meal plans and it looks like I don't have anything to worry about for this next one. Throughout this challenge I've been eating more than I used to. I'm still trying to get my head around that! What a great day already, bring on the final few weeks.

    Day 49 What a steep learning curve this challenge has been! I admit that I thought I knew it all when it came to nutrition and training - I'm glad to be proven wrong. The best part is that I've learned so much about myself. I've often thought that challenges like this are difficult because of the exercise or because of the nutrition. Really when it comes down to it, the challenging part is getting your mind into gear. If you think that the food and exercise is difficult, then it will be. If you think it's easy, it will be. Belief is such a powerful thing. It has been a reflective week this week which has been wonderful. Thank you Maxine's - I'm so glad to be doing this challenge. Arnie's "Six Rules for Success" speech is always so inspiring. The YouTube link:

    Day 47 It's getting to that point in time where I'm realising that I can finish this challenge. The lifestyle changes all feel normal now. I'm not going to claim that it's all been smooth sailing, I've been through some big challenges but I'm still here. I'm still standing. The results are there. I'm really looking forward to the check-in next week and getting the new meal and exercise programs. I'm so determined to give the next five weeks everything I've got. It's just about being consistent now. Just keep going.

    Day 42 We're at the half way point today! What a great journey so far. I had a couple of friends come up to me today to say that I am leaning out. I also got a PB and reached a big goal of mine at Parkrun yesterday, so it's been a lovely weekend. Bring on the next 6 weeks

    Day 29 I went shopping for pants yesterday and surprised myself with the size I now fit into! Wow! I fully wasn't expecting to reach this point until much later in the challenge. First day of our new exercise programs today, it all looks really good. There are more exercises and more technical movements involved which will be good to keep focusing on technique. I'm enjoying using the barbell so I'm happy to see that there are extra barbell exercises over the next four weeks. Far out, we're in week 5!

    Day 25 I did my Week 4 Check-In this morning. What an eye opener. I've only lost 1.8kg but I can see such a difference. I have always known that muscle weighs more than fat and to not count on the scale too much, but to see it all working on my own body is pretty incredible. I am so much stronger, my endurance has improved, I have more energy and I am mentally a lot tougher as well. I'm loving the Maxine's products. White choc raspberry is my favourite bar, followed closely by the choc caramel crunch. The chocolate night time shakes are delicious, there's something about the consistency that makes it perfect before bed. Happy Week 4!

    Day 19 Check-in next week! Very exciting! I'm interested to see the difference the last few weeks have made. I definitely feel so much better and stronger. Not much to report on, just enjoying life.

    Day 14 Enjoying life! I'm seeing my body change every day, getting stronger, getting fitter. It's amazing how responsive your body can become. I'm really enjoying the food, my partner is coming up with some incredible ideas for meals. We had sushi for some lunches this week (everything measured to plan of course), last night was beef skewers on the barbie with zucchini, mushroom and onion. Delicious! I'm eating not only healthier food now but tastier too. Energy levels change from day to day, they're generally quite good. My body is adjusting so well to all of these changes. I had some trouble getting to sleep earlier in the challenge but now that's cleared up and I'm now naturally rising with the sun. I don't need as much sleep now so I have more hours to enjoy during the day.

    Day 8 There was a video I watched that Janet Kane posted on her Facebook page a few weeks ago which explained the fluctuation of female hormones and how it affects your performance in the gym as well as with your food. I highly recommend watching it: "The Unspoken Elements of Female Fat Loss" Essentially it explains how the second half of your cycle your body is less insulin sensitive which makes you more hungry and sluggish, and that it can affect you in the gym as well. I'm so glad I watched it. Generally I am pretty in tune with my body but just to have someone explain the science behind why we feel how we feel at different times was really helpful.

    Day 5 Nearing the end of week 1 and I'm feeling great. I'm noticing changes such as my skin clearing up and also having more energy. Falling asleep is taking longer than usual but when I wake up in the morning I actually feel refreshed. I think my body is needing less sleep now that I'm focusing 110% on being healthy. I remember watching a Max's video where a guy said that a fit body is a bi-product of a healthy lifestyle. I totally agree with that. I think a lot of people get lost in purely aesthetic goals, which there's nothing wrong with (that's why we're doing a body transformation challenge!) but it is equally important, if not more important to be noticing the non-aesthetic benefits. The small wins *are* the big wins. More energy, a clear mind, feeling positive, having a zest for life. I want to get to the end of the challenge and be able to look back and be grateful for all the new things that I've tried, grateful for the new people I've met. I'm using this challenge as a reason to do things I've been wanting to do for a long time. I am going to visit the beach more, ride my bike for the first time since stacking it as a kid, just living in the moment with whatever I choose to do. It's the little things that make the big things. It is the same with the challenge itself - the small choices that we make through the day with food and exercise all adds up to big results. I'm enjoying trying new recipes, I'm eating like a queen! Some things work better than others - just now I had an idea of putting a scoop of vanilla protein in my coffee thinking it would be delicious... Apparently hot water makes the protein clump/curdle. Delicious!

    Day 1 Finally! I'm so glad the challenge has officially started, I've been itching for it for what feels like ages. Leg day today, I'm focusing on tempo so I had to reduce the amount of weight I normally use pretty significantly. I enjoy focusing on technique. I got to work out with my partner today who is also doing the challenge, that was awesome and very motivating. I'm working out at home and I have a bit of equipment so I'm doing the "gym" program. I was outside on the laying leg curl and my dog kept coming up to me demanding cuddles. I'll have to get a photo next time. What did we do to deserve dogs! Food is all good, I feel like I'm constantly eating. I'm looking forward to trying some of the recipes on here, there's a jelly protein that looks delicious.

    Prep Week! I'm so excited to get this challenge started! I admit that I was hanging out for 9am yesterday, I waited for the the clock to tick over to log in. The meal and exercise plans look good. It's handy having a shopping list already written out. Bring on Monday!
